When you think of iconic horror films, Texas-based movies may come to mind. Texas ranks second in the U.S. for horror movie production, with around 1089 horror films set in the state. Missouri City, Texas, is the third most popular city for horror film production, featuring approximately 92 horror movies, including "They Wait in the Dark" (2022) and "The Cursed Tomb" (2009).
One of the most recognizable horror films set in Texas is the 1974 classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," filmed in locations around Austin, including Leander, Kingsland, and Bastrop.
"Visiting the location of your favorite horror film is always a fun vacation around Halloween," says Sarah Webber, Director of Marketing at InsureMyTrip. "This study helps scary movie enthusiasts secure their trips early and potentially save some money."
While Texas has contributed significantly to the horror film genre, California tops the list with over 2400 horror films, including classics like "Halloween," "The Shining," and "Psycho." Florida is third with 749 horror films.
